Those were the words of Eddie Howe when he spoke to the press after his team 1:0 win against Brentford on Saturday evening and he followed up by saying:
"Big result for us. Difficult game today, knew it was going be. Brentford are a difficult team to play against. It wasn't a game of many chances didn't think, thankfully we got the important goal we needed.
"I don't think we were in full rhythm today but that's what Brentford do; they disrupt you. It was a bitty game for us, we had to set-pieces right, crosses right and defensively I was very pleased with us today."
And that assessment will have resonated too in the post conversations among Newcastle supporters who will have enjoyed their post-match drinks in the pubs of Tyneside and beyond!
It wasn’t fluid and it wasn’t pretty, but it was three points and that’s all that mattered after three successive defeats.
The returning Sven Botman brought back a solidity to the back four as they gained their first clean sheet of the season and Bruno Guimaraes looked far more fluid and assured than of late, possibly due to the presence of Sean Longstaff alongside him.
Up front Ashley Barnes had a positive debut while Anthony Gordon continued his good form both in attack and in supporting his more defensive colleagues.
Meanwhile Brentford manager Thomas Frank appeared to have changed into his post-match moaning pants as he voiced his opinion that his side were undone by an 'on-field decision we have nothing to do with'.
He continued that a game at St James' demands 'character' from the referee 'in many ways' as he berated at the decision to award Newcastle a penalty when Anthony Gordon 'cleverly left his leg hanging'.
This was followed by a strange and unwarranted gripe towards Newcastle's ball boys referring in his opinion that if they do not want to give the ball back, an 'extra minute' should be added on.
Nothing from Frank however on the fact that his team only managed two efforts on target from among their 44% possession.
