The prospect of Mbappe on Tyneside was realised with gasps of astonishment from those inside the Grimaldi forum in Monaco when Newcastle Utd were placed in Group F and in doing so entered what was quickly labelled “the supergroup of death” by Chief executive Darren Eales.
For some Newcastle fans they would not have it any other way as the return of European nights on Tyneside have been a long time waiting; while the prospect of seeing the team go up against European elite at the group stages is for others the thing of dreams.
And for the players it is an opportunity to enter their names into Tyneside footballing folklore in the same way that Tino Asprilla did so some 26 years ago back in September 1997.
Tino’s hattrick against Barcelona stunned the footballing world and there is no reason why any of the current United squad cannot write their own piece of Tyneside history in the six group games to come.
Paris, Dortmund, Milan here we come!
